Berlin Enrique Nelson will play teenage Kayce in Marshals season 2, adding a glimpse of the Dutton’s past to an episode about a dangerous fugitive hunt.

Marshals Season 2 Casts Berlin Enrique Nelson as Young Kayce Dutton

The past is catching up with Kayce Dutton in Marshals. Berlin Enrique Nelson has been cast as a teenage version of the character, played as an adult by Luke Grimes, in the Yellowstone spin-off’s second season. The role puts Kayce’s younger years on screen, giving the series a way to revisit his family history while its present-day story follows him in a different line of work.

That distinction matters. A younger version of a familiar character can fill in gaps, but it can also change how viewers read the adult they already know. Nelson’s casting signals an opportunity to add perspective on Kayce’s past; it doesn’t yet tell us what the flashback will reveal, or how much time the series will give it.

A fugitive hunt and a family flashback

Nelson is due to appear in episode four, “Blast Radius.” The casting points to a flashback involving the Dutton family, though the series hasn’t confirmed whether Nelson will return in later episodes. He previously appeared in Netflix’s Poser, a credit that establishes a prior screen role without saying much about the shape or scale of his part in Marshals.

“Blast Radius” follows Kayce and Andrea, played by Ash Santos, as they try to manage personal anxieties while spending their free time tracking fugitives. A capture leads them to the location of a notorious bomber who once escaped Cal’s grasp, drawing the team into a pursuit that brings old wounds back into play. The episode’s setup pairs an active investigation with unresolved personal history, a structure that gives the flashback a natural point of entry.

That doesn’t mean the teenage Kayce will be directly tied to the fugitive case. The available synopsis leaves that connection open, and the series hasn’t explained whether the past and present will mirror one another or simply run alongside each other. Here’s the thing: the uncertainty is part of the appeal, but it also means the casting announcement offers a clue about form, not a full account of the episode.

The episode also puts Belle, played by Arielle Kebbel, in danger as threats close in on her home. Meanwhile, Miles, played by Tatanka Means, keeps information from Maddie about Cal’s cancer. Those threads add pressure beyond the chase, giving “Blast Radius” several personal stakes to manage at once. The synopsis leaves open how the younger Kayce fits into these present-day pressures.

And this is the part most people overlook: a flashback can do more than supply background. It can change the weight of a decision in the present, especially when a series is built around family loyalties and old injuries. Whether “Blast Radius” uses the device that way remains to be seen.

Kayce remains at the centre of Marshals

Grimes continues as the adult Kayce, the youngest Dutton son who leaves the family ranch to join an elite US Marshals unit working across Montana. That change in setting gives the character a new professional frame, while his family ties keep the series connected to the story audiences know from Yellowstone. The show has kept him at the centre of the expanding franchise, and the new casting offers a chance to explore parts of his childhood that the original series only hinted at.

This is more significant than it looks, though the limits are clear. A teenage casting gives the writers room to show Kayce before the life depicted in Marshals, but one confirmed appearance doesn’t establish a sustained childhood storyline. If you’re watching for a deeper account of how Kayce became the adult on screen, “Blast Radius” may offer a piece of that history. It may also be a brief detour within a plot driven by the present-day team.

The main cast also includes Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Santos as Andrea Cruz and Means as Miles Kittle. Returning Yellowstone cast members include Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo. That mix gives the spin-off familiar connections to its parent series alongside characters whose stories are being developed within the Marshals unit.

For a franchise spin-off, that balance is a practical storytelling question: how much of each episode belongs to the new procedural work, and how much returns to the Dutton family history? The episode description suggests both strands will be in play, but it doesn’t show which one will dominate. A flashback can deepen the central character without taking over the hour. Or it can signal that the series plans to spend more time with the past.

What the casting could mean for the season

Season two began earlier this month, with Grimes, Means and Santos returning. Production on the new episodes started in June, following the show’s renewal in March. Nelson’s confirmed appearance is limited to “Blast Radius” for now; whether the flashback signals a wider look at Kayce’s past remains unclear.

That’s a restrained amount of information, and it calls for restrained expectations. The casting gives viewers a concrete reason to expect a younger Kayce in the episode, while the plot description supplies several present-day conflicts. It doesn’t confirm a recurring role, the details of the flashback, or how the episode will connect those elements.

The broader question is how Marshals will use its link to Yellowstone. Familiar characters can give a spin-off continuity, but the new series also needs its own momentum. Kayce’s work with the Marshals offers that present-tense engine; family history can add texture when the story has a reason to return to it. The balance will be clearer as the season develops.

Marshals is one of two ongoing Yellowstone spin-offs. The other, Dutton Ranch, has also been renewed and stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth and Rip. That gives the franchise more than one route for following characters beyond the original series, though each show has a different centre of gravity. For “Blast Radius,” the immediate question is narrower: what does teenage Kayce add to the story the adult Kayce is living now?

For now, the answer is simply a glimpse. A revealing one, perhaps.
