Summer Previews: The Season’s Most Anticipated Shows

In 2001, the Studio Museum in Harlem staged the first of its intermittent “F show” series, career-making surveys of emerging artists of African descent. That exhibition, “Freestyle,” infamously introduced the term post-black to describe the work of a cohort of artists whose work expressed a certain ambivalence about the category of “Black art,” including Sanford Biggers, Mark Bradford, Julie Mehretu, and Rashid Johnson. The latest installment, “Fade,” features seventeen artists from across the United States, the youngest of whom, Coumba Samba, was born the year before the series debuted. It features new commissions by artists including Taj Poscé, Lola Ayisha Ogbara, and Utē Petit. —Rachel Wetzler
