Gente, gente! is set to present “Aria,” on Nov. 22 in Lawson and Nov. 29 in Sydney.
“Aria” is a semi-staged and narrated concert of arias for women voices by such composers as Puccini, Massenet, Poulenc, Donizetti, and Mozart, among others. Performers include Lucy Bailes, Emmeline Booth, Sarah Cherlin, Tessa Hayward, Spark Sanders-Robertson, and Nathaniel Kong.
The Lawson performance is set to take place at 3 p.m. local time at the Lawson Mechanics Institute, while the Sydney showcase starts at 2 p.m. at St. David’s in Haberfield.
The performances will be accompanied by a masterclass series designed to support artists beyond university and young artist programs.
Gente, gente! is a a women-led opera company in New South Wales that supports women in all areas of opera production, including conducting, producing, directing, writing, performing, and composing, and provides solo performance opportunities for mid-career artists who have worked professionally.
“Many young artist programs are capped at 26, which severely limits pathways into professional opera in New South Wales,” said Sarah Cherlin, founder and creative producer of Gente, gente!, per an official press release. “Gente, gente! addresses this gap by supporting artists beyond traditional entry points and creating mentorship, artistic development and long-term sustainability within the local operatic ecosystem.”
